Beyond the classroom — real-world impact through Project NePTWNE and Erie-GAINS
Making a Difference Together
At Gannon University, learning goes beyond the classroom. Students
work alongside faculty, researchers, community leaders and industry
partners to tackle real-world challenges that make a lasting impact on
both the local community and the world. Through innovative initiatives
such as Project NePTWNE and
Erie-GAINS, students gain valuable hands-on experience
while contributing to environmental sustainability, community
development and social innovation. These opportunities allow students to
apply their knowledge, develop leadership skills and graduate prepared
to create meaningful change.
Project NePTWNE: Advancing Environmental
Innovation
Located on the shores of Lake Erie, Gannon
University is uniquely positioned to address some of today’s most
important environmental challenges. Project NePTWNE
(Nano & Polymer Technology for Water and Neural-networks in Erie) is
Gannon’s signature sustainability initiative that brings together
students and faculty from engineering, environmental science, biology
and other disciplines to develop innovative solutions for water quality,
climate change and environmental protection.
Students participate in research that measures and removes
microplastics from waterways, explores new environmental technologies
and supports the long-term health of the Great Lakes. Through field
research aboard the University’s research vessel,
Environaut, and work in advanced laboratories, students
gain practical experience using professional research equipment while
contributing to projects with real environmental impact.
Project NePTWNE reflects Gannon’s commitment to combining academic
excellence with innovation, preparing students to become the next
generation of scientists, engineers and environmental leaders.
Erie-GAINS: Building Stronger Communities
Gannon University is equally committed to strengthening the community
it calls home. Erie-GAINS (Erie-Gannon Alliances to
Improve Neighborhood Sustainability) connects students with local
government agencies, nonprofit organizations, schools and community
partners to improve the neighborhoods surrounding campus and enhance the
quality of life in Erie.
Through volunteer service, service-learning courses, internships,
research projects and civic engagement activities, students work on
initiatives that address real community needs while developing valuable
professional and leadership skills. Whether participating in
neighborhood revitalization projects, supporting local organizations or
collaborating with community leaders, students learn that meaningful
education includes making a positive difference in the lives of
others.
Learning with Purpose
These initiatives exemplify Gannon University’s approach to
education—combining academic knowledge with hands-on experience and
meaningful community engagement. Students don’t simply study solutions
to today’s challenges; they become active participants in creating
them.
By collaborating with faculty, researchers, local organizations and
industry partners, Gannon students graduate with practical experience,
strong professional networks and the confidence to make an impact
wherever their careers take them. At Gannon, education is not only about
earning a degree—it’s about developing the knowledge, skills and purpose
to improve communities and shape a better future.
